Three new houses designed for multi-generational living on Bergen’s city mountainside.

The project is located in Starefossen, Bergen. A popular neighborhood close to the city center with direct access to hiking trails. The three new houses replace a single villa which had fallen into disrepair and had to be demolished due to structural reasons.

The new houses are contemporary but designed to be sensitive to the area with their pitched roofs, massing that matches the neighboring villas, and use of dry-stone walls.

The three houses are placed tightly together with both shared and private terraces filling the spaces between them. The houses share a common foundation and are connected via a lift shaft to the parking level in the basement.

The addition of the lift directly from the parking level allows the inhabitants to continue living in their homes in later phases of life. The project therefore has the benefits of an apartment building, with parking and lift access, whilst having the architectural qualities and appearance of three separate houses.

The project was nominated for Bergen Kommune’s Byformingspris in 2022.

The project attempts to answer the question of how we can develop existing neighborhoods close to the city center for increased density of living whilst maintaining the historic character of the area.
