‘Under takene’ is our proposal submitted for an open design competition for new workshop and educational buildings at Follo Museum in Drøbak, Norway.
Follo is an open air museum has multiple historical buildings relocated from the areas surrounding Drøbak in eastern Norway.
The museum is also a center for traditional crafts from a wide variety of special fields from ‘Bunadsøm’ (the making of traditional Norwegian clothing) to boat building.
The basis for the competition was the need for improved and larger facilities for these traditional crafts.
The form of the building is inspired by traditional sawmills found along the rivers of Eastern Norway. These buildings had practical, large covered spaces constructed from solid timber.
The new workshop building required spaces adapted to specific handcrafts whilst also having the flexibility to host various workshops and educational courses. The building also serves at the entrance and welcome area for the rest of the museum complex.
The saw-tooth roofs with clerestory windows bathe the workshop spaces with Northern light - a tried and tested design for production buildings of the past.
A model of the project was exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Show in London. Model - ‘Follo Verksted’ Solid Maple, 2021
